The Playtime International Children’s and Maternity Fair launched New Now at its Paris show for the 21st Edition. The New Now section of the fair showcased 12 new brands selected byDebs Sfez, stylist and editor of Papier Mache magazine. Here are a few of our faves!
Spanish brand Popelin was launched in 2013 by Cristina Sanchez. The new Popelin collection takes it’s inspiration from the origins and customs of southern Spain, Murcia, where Cristina grew up and lives. Cristina studied the typical clothing worn in the past and reinvented and adapted the styles for Aw17 to ensure they were comfortable for your little ones. We simply love the vintage touch.
Popelin produces sustainable childrenswear, with all its materials and the manufacturing being 100% Spanish.
Icelandic knitwear brand Ylur features timeless designs and garments that will last a lifetime. Ylur was created by Fanney Svansdottir, who was inspired by her grandmother and her love of knitting and wanted to create beautiful handmade designs for her daughter. Ylur does not produce a seasonal collection and new designs are added from time to time.
Established 2011 in Budapest, Hungary Manuela kids design has been described as ‘decorative minimalism, where the Scandinavian puritanism meets Hungarian decorative and colourful floral culture.’ Using the finest fabrics, mostly from Italy, designer Manuela creates her own prints and fabrics. The garments are made in Hungary and the patterns are printed by hand using silk screen technique.
The AW17 collection the ‘Tales of the Wooden Hut’ shown at Playtime Paris uses graphics made using paint brush, pencil and marker techniques. There are several designs which now feature regularly in the Manuela collections, both the raincoat and bolero as featured below.
British knitwear brand Mabli focuses on using the finest 100% Merino wool. The vintage inspired label which recently launched their first collection last autumn is made in Europe with one or two items produced in Wales, home of Mabli. The Aw17 collection includes new styles and a range of socks made in Wales.
Fresh from Brooklyn, NY, Lula Aldunate designer of Lulaland presented her 7th collection, the ‘Cosmic Tribal’ collection featuring original prints and interesting fabrics and textures. Timeless and whimsical designs are designed in the US and manufactured in India and every car has been taken to respect the planet and it’s people. The ethical brand won the Pirouette blog award for best Children’s Fashion and Accessories during Playtime Paris.
Vild Swedish for Wild creates a mini collection of luxurious basics for children 0-5 years. Influenced by Scandinavian form and function Vild – House of Little produces timeless, minimalist designs in soft GOTS organic cotton. Each season Vild design a new signature limited edition print. The AW17 print design is named Outer Space. New for AW17 Vild have designed an accessories collection.
The AW17 Collection from Cherry Papaya is inspired by the colours, patterns and artefacts of Tribal African art. Combining the inspiration found and raw spirited cloths and weaves Cherry Papaya Kids presented the Aw17 Tribal Collection at the recent Playtime Trade show. The collection is produced in Portugal using organic materials. New for AW17, Cherry Papaya introduce a knitwear range to their collection.
It was interesting speaking to designers at Playtime Paris as there seemed to be an overriding theme of more brands moving towards producing closer to home and an emphasis on slow fashion.
