Pitti Bimbo, a children’s fashion event & trade show in the heart of Florence, feels like an enormous party! That is of course, unless you are working on a stand, then it’s a thoroughly exhausting 3-day full body workout. Thankfully, I was merely a spectator in this extravagant
showcase of the biggest and best in children’s fashion.
Pitti Bimbo, also referred to as just Pitti by fashion insiders, is where everyone from emerging new designers to titans of the fashion world (think Dolce & Gabbana, Cavalli, Diesel, to name only a few!) showcase their latest collections. You will find the heavy weights of the kids’ fashion world such as Monnalisa and Il Gufo, plus multiple boutique designers. The majority of brands come from Europe: Italy (it’s in Florence after all!), Portugal, Spain, France, the UK and Scandinavian designers too; occasionally you come
across a brand that has travelled from Latin America or even as far as New Zealand to be at this mecca of children’s fashion!
As with any fashion event, it’s a mix of traditional and contemporary looks. Classic brands know that tartan, smocked dresses and a combination of navy, burgundy & dark green always wins. This winter seems to have even more contemporary options – streetwear & activewear for children and teenagers is all the rage. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with activewear dominating catwalks across the world! Baby brands, big and small mostly stick to classic looks, with many new designers offering strictly organic lines (GOTS certified of course – Google it!).
There is a special pavilion for emerging and new designers), but don’t be fooled, some of the so-called emerging brands have six figure revenue and sell to established retailers. As well as clothing, Pitti Bimbo showcases endless ‘hot off the press’ toys and accessories too – think lavish wooden rockers and artisan-made Italian leather headbands. You can also
find every kind of shoe imaginable – from the humble espadrille to luxurious fur leather boots with wacky animal print.
Music is playing, DJ of course not Spotify! Among this party there are private showrooms and invitation only events such as fashion shows showcasing latest collections from the more established brands. Front rows are filled with mini-bloggers and influencers #pittibimbo88.
So what’s missing? If you love luxury, glamour and fashion then this is the place for you! It is big, bold and loud. If you are looking for laid back atmosphere and trying to find a hidden gem then this is probably not it, despite it’s large scale there is no place to hide at Pitti Bimbo!
