Tell us a little bit about you and your family.
Although I have been quite independent most of my life, I continue to learn from my younger twin sisters every day, and love them to bits! There’s no doubt that we’re all worlds apart, but our unique characteristics are what make each of us our own person. I’m so proud of each of them. The world isn’t a ‘walk in the park’ and both have raised the bar when it comes to their own dreams and career goals. I owe a great deal to my parents and take in every day knowing that their in uence in my life has played a key role in where I knew I wanted to be, and what I have achieved till this day. I’ll forever be grateful for this.
How would you describe your photography style in 5 words?
Expression, otherworldly, colorful, bold, lively.
Give us a little insight into your creative process.
I quote from Anais Nin: ‘We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.’ My inspiration comes from within.
It’s important to determine what you want to convey in the story you plan to shoot. Usually my intent is fueled
by emotion, color, texture and expression. I form a plot structure to direct the sequence of events that lead the character (models) towards the objective. I enjoy thinking of my stories as drama plays with key turning points in each shot. It is vital to work with exceptional artists that share the vision of the photographer. I have a deep love for makeup and hair artists. Once I’ve identified the artists that I would like to work with (stylist and hair and makeup), we discuss ideas and what would visually fit the shots. From an early age it was my goal to make my work unique and real.
How has social media helped your career?
My Instagram account is a strong foundation for my visuals and the perfect t for my photography. Plus,
it links directly to my website, margueriteoelofse.com. In my eld, you can’t go wrong with Instagram.
Since my work is aesthetically charged, the platform makes for an apt complement to what I’d ideally share with those, who have similar, yet discerning taste, and who appreciate my unique images. The opportunity with @hooligansmagazine was an Instagram plus. I can certainly vouch for its effectiveness in carrying over the right message, and catering to my, and what I believe is others’ artistic vision. Instagram has taken my work to places I would never have imagined I could reach in my own capacity, and I’m excited at the prospects the platform holds for photography.
When you hear the word orange, what comes to mind?
Excitement, energy and hope.
